Backyard Makeover Budgeting Guide

A clear, realistic guide to understanding the full investment behind outdoor living projects

How to Use This Guide

This guide is designed to help you plan realistically and confidently for an outdoor living project. It is not intended to provide a quote or a fixed price.

As you read, keep the following principles in mind:

  • This is not a price list or estimate.
  • The budget ranges reflect the total, finished investment of completed projects.
  • Most projects evolve during design and construction as ideas become clearer.
  • The goal is to help you identify a comfortable investment range, not a single number.
  • Your priorities and choices directly influence where a project lands within a range.
  • Some backyard makeovers involve multiple projects listed below and therefore require “adding investments together” to arrive at a budget.
  • It can be hard to determine where your project fits into the ones described in this guide.  In our initial consultation, we will help you figure that out.

At Bear Creek Outdoor Living, we believe price should be transparent and comfortable to discuss. The ranges in this guide are the same ones we use internally when helping clients prepare for real projects.

A Note on Full Turnkey Projects: Design, Build, and Furnishings

All of the budget ranges in this guide are based on full turnkey projects — meaning they reflect the complete investment required to take a project from initial concept through a finished, usable outdoor space.

That includes:

  • Professional design
  • Complete construction
  • Furnishings and final setup

Many homeowners initially think only about construction costs. Design and furnishings are often overlooked early in the process, even though both are essential to the success of the project.

Why Design Matters

Thoughtful design ensures that:

  • Your investment is spent intentionally
  • The space functions well for how you actually live
  • Layout, materials, and details work together cohesively
  • Costly mid-project changes are minimized

Design is not an add-on. It is the tool that allows a project to use its budget well.

Why Furnishings Matter

A beautifully built outdoor space without furnishings is incomplete.

Furnishings:

  • Make the space usable from day one
  • Shape how people gather, relax, and move through the space
  • Are almost always required before a space can truly be enjoyed

Because furnishings are always part of the final outcome, our budget ranges account for them up front, rather than treating them as an afterthought. These budgets account for the purchase of furnishings; however, some clients already have furnishings they wish to use, and the cost of furnishings varies, so the final furnishing investment for a project can vary greatly.

Why This Affects Budget Expectations

When design and furnishings are included — as they should be — the true investment in a project becomes clearer. This is often why these ranges look higher than construction-only numbers found online.

Why Backyard Projects Cost More Than Many People Expect

Outdoor living has changed significantly.

Today’s backyard projects are rarely just one isolated feature. Most are designed as integrated environments that function as extensions of the home — meant to be used daily, across seasons, and for many years.

Costs reflect:

  • Increased material and labor prices
  • Greater expectations for durability and performance
  • The complexity of integrating structures, hardscape, landscape, lighting, and amenities into one cohesive plan

This guide reflects current realities, not outdated assumptions.

What Drives the Cost of a Backyard Project

Across all project types, the same factors consistently influence investment:

  1. Scope of the Project
Size, amenities, features, and how many elements are included.
  2. Design Complexity
Straightforward layouts differ greatly from highly customized solutions that respond to views, grades, architecture, and lifestyle.
  3. Site Conditions
Slope, drainage, access, soil conditions, and existing structures can significantly affect construction effort and cost.
  4. Materials
There is a wide range between entry-level durability and premium, long-life, low-maintenance options.
  5. Level of Finish
Details, built-ins, trim, lighting, stonework, and craftsmanship often define how a space feels and performs.

Existing Conditions & Integration
Some homes already have elements that can be incorporated. Others require removal or rebuilding to move forward.
